The 2 Cents Per Mile Car

It was already 30 years ago when Pinoy Daniel Dingle claimed that he invented a water-powered car. Though electric jeepneys ply the routes in Makati City today, I still feel that our government is slow in its efforts to take advantage of these potential alternative fuel sources.

Pretty muched hyped in the US right now is the coming of the Tesla Roadster, a fully electric sports car. The car can travel 220 mi (350 km) on a single charge of its lithium-ion battery pack and accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 4 seconds. It has a top speed of 125 mph and has a full-charge time of 3.5 hours. The wall outlet charge will only cost you $2.50.

There is minimal maintenance required for the electric vehicle. There are no oil changes, and brake maintenance is minor. Transmission, brake and cooling system fluids will need to be changed in a manner similar to gasoline-powered cars.

As of January 15, 2008, all 650 Tesla Roadsters planned for model year 2008 had been reserved. All the units were sold in 2 weeks. The Roadster is initially only available in the US.

Right now the Roadster is priced at $100,000, so it’s something only rich people would buy. But most new technology starts out with rich people.

It will take some time before the first Roadsters reach the Philippines but initially I'd be happy if we could have more of Makati's e-jeepneys all over the country.

I'm looking forward to seeing this technology trickle down to mass-market!

Sweet! I gotta get me one.

The soonest the mass-market gets an electric car is when Aptera's Typ-1 comes out, seen in my earlier posts.

This is really one nice cool car. I just do not think its "open roof" design would fit on most streets in the Philippine setting.

But I really hope that there will be more cars that will be designed to use less fuel consumption just like this one.
